How to Make Smoky Low-Carb Barbecue Sauce

    1. Combine Ingredients in Skillet

Begin by gathering all the ingredients. In a medium skillet, combine the pureed tomatoes, apple cider vinegar, and powdered erythritol sweetener. If you have yacón syrup or blackstrap molasses on hand, add 2 teaspoons at this point. This will give your sauce a deeper, more complex sweetness.

    2. Add Spices and Liquid Smoke

Next, add the liquid smoke, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, chipotle powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Place the skillet over medium heat and whisk the ingredients together until well combined.

    3. Simmer the Sauce

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Once it starts to bubble, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. This simmering process is crucial as it allows the sauce to reduce by half, concentrating the flavors and naturally thickening it.

    4. Add Xanthan Gum

After the sauce has reduced, sprinkle in the xanthan gum while whisking continuously. The sauce will become even thicker and smoother as you whisk.

    5. Store the Sauce

Once everything is well incorporated and the sauce has reached your desired consistency, remove it from the heat. Transfer the barbecue sauce to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep well for up to a week.
