How to Make Golden Sesame Tofu with Vibrant Herb & Chili Dip

1. Prepare Tofu

Start by cutting the tofu in half lengthwise, and then slice it into ½-inch-thick pieces. This will give you the perfect size for frying and ensure they crisp up nicely.

2. Coat Tofu

In a shallow bowl, mix together the sesame seeds, cornstarch, fine sea salt, five-spice powder, and white pepper. Coat each tofu slice thoroughly in this mixture, ensuring an even layer on both sides. This step is crucial because the cornstarch and sesame seeds create a crispy, golden crust that makes the tofu delightful to eat.

3. Prepare Herb and Chili Mix

Next, prepare the herb and chili mix by placing the chopped cilantro, scallions, minced garlic, and Sichuan chili flakes in a small heatproof bowl. Layer the garlic and chili flakes on top, as this will enhance the flavor release when we pour hot oil over them.

4. Fry Tofu

Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat and add 3 tablespoons of neutral oil. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place the coated tofu slices in the pan. Fry them for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. This frying process will give the tofu a wonderful texture and flavor. Transfer the fried tofu to a serving platter once done.

5. Prepare Dipping Sauce

For the dipping sauce, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in the same skillet until it shimmers. Pour this hot oil over the garlic and chili flake mixture in the heatproof bowl, which will sizzle and release an aromatic burst of flavors. Stir in the light soy sauce, water, sugar, and rice vinegar to complete the sauce.

6. Serve

Serve the crispy tofu hot, accompanied by the vibrant herb and chili dipping sauce. The combination of textures and flavors will make this dish an unforgettable experience.
