How to Make Classic Chewy M&M Cookies

    1. Prep Work

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

    2. Cookie Dough

In a large mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine the soft butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until smooth and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add the baking soda and mix in. Switch to using a rubber spatula, fold in the all-purpose flour until just combined. Fold in the coarsely chopped M&M’s with care to avoid overmixing. Chill the dough in the refrigerator while the oven preheats.

    3. Baking

With two spoons or a cookie scoop, drop 2-tablespoon portions of the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them a couple of inches apart. Place the cookies in the preheated oven and bake until the edges are lightly golden, around 10 to 12 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets. They will set as they cool.

    Variations

    Chocolate Chip Cookies

Replace the M&Ms with chocolate chips. You can use milk, dark, semi-sweet, or white chocolate chips, depending on your preference.

    Double Chocolate Cookies

Add cocoa powder to the dough to make it chocolatey and then include white chocolate chips or chunks for contrast.

    Double Chocolate

Add 1/4 cup of cocoa powder to the dough for a rich, chocolatey base that makes the M&Ms pop.

    Brown Butter Base

Instead of using regular softened butter, brown the butter first until it has a nutty aroma and a golden color. This will give the cookies a deeper, caramel-like flavor that pairs wonderfully with the candy pieces.

    Salted Caramel Cookies

Add caramel bits to the dough and sprinkle a little sea salt on top before baking for a sweet and salty treat.
