1. Prepare Beef Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of water with 0.5 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix in the ground beef until well combined. Let sit for at least 5 minutes.
2. Cook Vegetables
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
3. Cook Ground Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula, about 7-10 minutes.
4. Drain Fat
Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
5. Add Sauce Ingredients
Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, remaining tablespoon of water, and 0.125 teaspoon of baking soda to the skillet. Stir everything together until well combined.
6. Simmer Mixture
Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
7. Toast Buns
While the beef mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.
8. Assemble Sloppy Joes
Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with the other halves and serve immediately.
Add taco seasoning, use tomato salsa, and serve with avocado and tortilla chips.
Stir in shredded cheddar, pepper jack, or smoked gouda into the meat or sprinkle on top for a cheesy crust.
Serve in taco shells with lettuce, cheese, and salsa.
Use the mixture as a base, top with mashed potatoes, and bake until golden.
Use your favorite barbecue sauce for a tangy, smoky flavor. Consider adding liquid smoke for enhanced smokiness.
