1. Bring Water to a Boil
Start by bringing 4 cups of water to a boil in a heavy-bottomed pot.
2. Whisk in Polenta and Salt
Once the water is boiling, whisk in 1 cup of polenta and 1 teaspoon of salt. Whisking helps to prevent any lumps from forming, ensuring a smooth consistency.
3. Simmer and Stir
Turn the heat down to a simmer and stir constantly until the polenta is fully suspended in the water and no longer settles at the bottom. Continue to cook the polenta on low heat, stirring occasionally. If it becomes too thick, add a little more water to achieve the desired consistency. This process should take about an hour.
4. Add Butter and Parmesan
Once the polenta is cooked, stir in 3 tablespoons of butter and ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese. The butter will add richness, while the cheese provides a savory depth of flavor.
5. Adjust Seasoning and Serve
Finally, taste the polenta and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt if needed. Serve the polenta warm, or if you prefer, spread it on a baking sheet to cool and set.
