1. Prepare Dough
In a large mixing bowl or using a stand mixer, combine your flour, yeast, water, salt, sugar, and a drizzle of olive oil. Knead the dough either by hand or with the mixer until it becomes smooth and elastic.
2. Set Dough to Rise
Once your dough is kneaded, set it aside to rise in a warm place.
3. Prepare Toppings
While the dough is rising, slice the tomatoes and mozzarella, and tear the basil leaves into smaller pieces.
4. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan
When the dough has doubled in size, preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Place an overturned rimmed baking sheet or a baking stone on the lowest rack of the oven to preheat. Generously grease a pizza pan with olive oil.
5. Incorporate Potato and Spread Dough
Incorporate the mashed boiled potato into your risen dough. Spread the dough evenly in the greased pizza pan, shaping it to fit.
6. Pre-bake Crust
Pre-bake the crust in your preheated oven until it is lightly golden.
7. Add Toppings
Once pre-baked, remove the crust from the oven and quickly add your prepared toppings. Arrange the tomato slices evenly across the crust, followed by the mozzarella slices and basil leaves.
8. Bake Pizza
Return the pizza to the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
9. Cool and Serve
Allow the pizza to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Turn the pizza into a meat lover's delight by adding cooked, crumbled sausage, pepperoni slices, or diced grilled chicken on top of the sauce before adding the cheese. You can also explore vegetarian protein options like marinated tofu or tempeh.
Swap the tomato sauce for homemade or store-bought pesto. Add grilled vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and eggplant. Sprinkle with feta or goat cheese for a tangy kick.
Skip the tomato sauce and use a creamy garlic sauce or ricotta spread as the base. Top with mozzarella, dollops of ricotta, thinly sliced potatoes, rosemary, and finish with a drizzle of olive oil after baking.
For a non-vegetarian twist, scatter crispy pancetta, prosciutto, or chorizo over the pizza before baking. This will introduce a new texture and a savory depth.
Use BBQ sauce as the base. Add cooked, shredded chicken tossed in a bit of the same BBQ sauce, red onion slices, and gouda or smoked mozzarella cheese. Garnish with fresh cilantro after baking.
