How to Make Cinnamon-Kissed Golden Apple Crumble

    1. Prep Apples

In a large bowl, combine apples, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of salt, and cinnamon, tossing to coat evenly.

    2. Bake Apples

Place racks in upper-middle and lowest positions and preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Move the apple mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish with at least 2-inch sides, pressing into a flat layer. Seal the dish with foil, place on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake on the lower rack for 35 minutes.

    3. Prepare Topping

While apples bake, in a medium bowl, whisk together flour, chopped almonds, ½ cup of brown sugar, and the remaining ½ teaspoon of salt. Stir in melted butter, vanilla, and water until the mixture forms clumps and is evenly moistened.

    4. Finish Baking

After baking, remove apples from the oven, remove foil, and press down with a spatula to create space for the topping. If needed, bake apples for 5-15 more minutes. Then, spread the crumble topping over the apples, breaking any large clumps. Return to the upper rack and bake until the topping is golden brown and the edges are bubbling, approximately 25-35 minutes.

    5. Cool and Serve

Allow the crumble to cool on a wire rack for at least 45 minutes before serving.

    Variations

    Rhubarb and Strawberry Crumble

A classic pairing where you use both rhubarb and strawberries in the filling, seasoned with vanilla and orange zest. The tartness of the rhubarb complements the sweetness of the strawberries beautifully.

    Spiced Pear and Cranberry Crumble

A wonderful option for the fall, combining pears with fresh or dried cranberries, and a mix of autumnal spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove in both the filling and topping.

    Peach Ginger Crumble

Use ripe peaches instead of apples and infuse the filling with fresh grated ginger. You can also incorporate candied ginger into the crumble topping for an additional spicy kick.

    Berry Almond Crumble

Swap the apples for a mix of berries and add almond extract to the filling. Use sliced almonds in the crumble topping for a nutty flavor and extra crunch.

    Caramel Drizzle

Drizzle caramel sauce over the finished crumble for a decadent touch.
