1. Prepare the Patties
Divide the ground beef into two equal parts. Gently form each part into a patty that is about 3/4 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb. Season both sides of each burger generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
2. Cook the Burgers
Preheat your grill, grill pan, or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Place a slice of American cheese on each patty and let it melt.
3. Toast the Buns
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil or butter. Toast the buns until they’re golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.
4. Prepare the Toppings
Wash and prepare the lettuce leaves, tomato slices, onion slices, and pickles. Cook the bacon until crispy, if using.
5. Assemble the Burgers
Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun. Add the ketchup and mustard. Place a lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and onion rings. Add the cheese-topped burger patties. Add bacon and pickles. Cap with the top halves of the buns.
6. Serve
Serve the All American Cheese Burgers immediately with your favorite side.
