How to Make Savory Cheddar-Thyme Garlic Bread

1. Prepare Dough

In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, yeast, and salt. In a jug, mix together 300ml of hand-hot water, olive oil, and honey. Gradually pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring continuously until a soft dough forms.

2. Kneading

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky, adding a little more flour if necessary. Once kneaded, stretch the dough to fit a Swiss roll tin.

3. Add Flavors

In a small bowl, mix the crushed garlic with the soft butter. Dot this garlic butter evenly over the surface of the stretched dough. Sprinkle the grated mature cheddar cheese on top, followed by the chopped thyme leaves. Cover the bread with lightly oiled cling film and set aside in a warm place to rise for 40 minutes.

4. Bake

Preheat your oven to 200°C (fan 180°C/gas mark 6). Once the dough has risen, remove the cling film and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and well-risen. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes.

5. Serve

Cut the freshly baked garlic bread into 12 equal pieces and serve warm to enjoy its full flavor.

Pitfalls and tips

Use high-quality bread

Choose a bread with a good crust and a soft, airy interior that can absorb the butter mixture well without becoming soggy.

Grate your own cheese

Pre-grated cheese often has anti-caking agents that can affect how it melts. Grating your own cheese from a block will give you better melt and flavor.

Fresh herbs over dried

Fresh thyme and parsley will provide a brighter, more vibrant flavor than their dried counterparts. If fresh is not available, use one-third the amount of dried herbs.

Soften the butter properly

Ensure your butter is at room temperature to make it easy to mix with the herbs and garlic. This will also help it spread more evenly on the bread.

Even spreading

Take your time to spread the garlic-herb butter evenly across the bread. This ensures every bite is flavorful.
