How to Make Homemade Pesto Sauce

1. Pulse Pine Nuts

Place the pine nuts into a food processor and give them a quick pulse until they’re just broken down, making sure to pause and scrape the sides of the bowl for an even texture.

2. Add Olive Oil and Garlic

Add the extra-virgin olive oil and garlic cloves to the food processor with the pine nuts. Pulse until the mixture is cohesively combined and the garlic is finely minced.

3. Incorporate Basil

Roughly chop the fresh basil leaves before adding them to the mixture in the food processor. Pulse, pushing down the leaves every 15 seconds, just until the basil is fully incorporated and maintains its vibrant green hue without over-processing.

4. Fold in Parmesan and Salt

Transfer the basil mixture from the processor into a mixing bowl. Fold in the Parmesan cheese and kosher salt with a spatula, tasting and adjusting the seasoning as needed.
