1. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F for baking fish fillets or steaks, or to 375°F if using a whole fish.
2. Season and Prepare Fish
Season the fish generously with salt and place it in a greased baking dish or on a rimmed baking sheet.
3. Bake the Fish
For fillets and steaks, bake in the oven for about 7 to 10 minutes. For whole fish, bake for about 10 minutes per inch of thickness until cooked through.
4. Check for Doneness
Gently press the fish to check for doneness. If it feels springy, it is cooked; if it feels soft, it needs more time.
5. Add Flavor Enhancements
If desired, add wine, a drizzle of olive oil, or butter over the fish before baking. Alternatively, wrap the fish in grape or fig leaves for an aromatic finish.
Start checking the fish a few minutes before the recommended cooking time; it should be opaque and flake easily with a fork, reaching an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C).
Opt for fresh or high-quality frozen fish with firm flesh that suits baking, like cod, halibut, salmon, or trout, ensuring even portions for consistent cooking.
Preheat the oven to around 425°F (220°C) to ensure quick cooking without drying out the fish.
Generously season the fish with salt at least 15-30 minutes before baking to allow it to penetrate the flesh, and add other spices just before cooking.
Pat the fish dry with paper towels before baking to help it sear properly and prevent a soggy texture.
