How to Make Rustic Apple-Pecan Crumble

    1. Preheat and Prep

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously butter a 13-by-9-inch baking dish.

    2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, 200g (1 cup) brown sugar, oats, pecans, and salt. Add the melted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a fork, mix until you have evenly moistened crumbs.

    3. Toss the Apples

Place the apples in the prepared baking dish. Toss them with the remaining 100g (1/2 cup) brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the apples into an even layer.

    4. Add the Crumble

Clump the crumb mixture with your hands to create varying sizes of chunks. Evenly sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apples.

    5. Bake

Transfer the dish to the oven. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crumble is crisp and a deep golden brown.

    6. Serve

Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

    Variations

    Seasonal Crumbles

Adjust the fruit based on the season; rhubarb in spring, berries in summer, apples and pears in fall, and citrus or persimmons in winter.

    Berry-Nut Crumble

Swap out apples for mixed berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries) and pecans for almonds or walnuts.

    Maple Syrup

Replace some of the sugar with maple syrup for a deeper, richer sweetness.

    Oats and Seeds

Add rolled oats or a variety of seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, flaxseed) to the crumble topping for added texture and nutrition.

    Stone Fruit Crumble

Use peaches, plums, apricots, or cherries instead of apples. Choose a complementary nut like hazelnuts.
