How to Make Classic Apple Crisp

1. Prepare the Crumble Topping

In a bowl, blend together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and fine sea salt. Work in the cold unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped pecans and old-fashioned rolled oats. If not using immediately, freeze the crumble topping for later use.

2. Prepare the Apple Filling

Core and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces and toss them in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with fresh lemon juice. Mix in additional granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, and fine sea salt to coat the apples thoroughly.

3. Assemble and Bake the Apple Crisp

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Evenly spread the apple mixture into the skillet and crumble the topping over the apples. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

4. Cool and Serve

Let the apple crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
