1. Prep Fruit
Slice two oranges and two lemons into thin rounds. Juice the remaining orange to obtain 4 ounces of fresh juice.
2. Assemble the Sangria
In a large pitcher or container, combine the two bottles of fruity red wine, 4 ounces of orange liqueur, the orange juice, and the thinly sliced oranges and lemons. Ensure all ingredients are well mixed.
3. Chill and Marinate
Cover the pitcher and refrigerate. Let the sangria sit for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together and the mixture to chill thoroughly. For optimal flavor, you can do this step up to 8 hours in advance.
4. Serve
Prior to serving, stir the sangria to ensure the ingredients are well combined. Serve the sangria in chilled wine glasses, half-filled with ice if desired. Garnish each glass with a few slices of the macerated fruit from the pitcher.
The wine is the backbone of your sangria. Select a wine you'd enjoy drinking on its own. A young, fruity, and unoaked red wine works best. Avoid overly tannic or complex wines, as their nuances will be lost.
Let your sangria mixture (minus the sparkling water and ice) sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight. This allows the flavors to meld together harmoniously.
Use fresh, in-season fruits for the best flavor. Thinly slice citrus to maximize the infusion of their oils without overpowering the drink. Choose fruits that complement the wine and liqueur flavors.
Right before serving, taste your sangria. Adjust with fresh lemon or lime juice if it needs more acid, more sparkling water if too strong, or lemon juice or more wine if too sweet.
Allow your fruits to macerate with the sugar, brandy, and orange liqueur for at least a few hours in the fridge. This sweetens the fruit and helps release their flavors into the liquid.
