1. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 450°F, ensuring it reaches the correct temperature for optimal baking.
2. Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine 3¾ cups of unbleached all-purpose flour with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix these dry ingredients thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
3. Add Buttermilk
Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in 1½ cups of buttermilk, stirring gently. Adjust consistency by adding more buttermilk if necessary, until the dough is soft but not wet or sticky.
4. Shape the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead briefly, just enough to bring it together. Shape into a round loaf about 1½ inches high.
5. Prepare for Baking
Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet and cut a deep cross into the top. This helps the heat penetrate the center for even baking and proper rising.
6. Bake the Bread
Bake in the preheated oven at 450°F for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 400°F and continue baking for another 30 minutes. Check for doneness by tapping the bottom of the loaf for a hollow sound.
