How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

1. Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

2. Prepare Sweet Potatoes

Wash and peel two large sweet potatoes. Cut them into evenly sized fries, about a quarter-inch thick.

3. Toss with Oil and Seasonings

In a large bowl, toss the sweet potato fries with two tablespoons of olive oil. Add half a teaspoon of salt, a quarter teaspoon of black pepper, and a quarter teaspoon of paprika. Mix well to coat evenly.

4. Arrange on Baking Sheet

Spread the fries out in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Ensure the fries aren't touching each other.

5. Bake and Flip

Place the fries in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Halfway through, take the fries out and flip them over.

6. Cool and Serve

Once the fries are golden brown and crispy, remove them from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Variations

Mexican-Style Fries

Season with taco seasoning, serve with a side of guacamole and salsa, and sprinkle with Cotija cheese.

Loaded Fries

Top your crispy sweet potato fries with crumbled bacon or chorizo, a sprinkle of cheese (such as feta or cheddar), and a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt.

Chipotle Mayo

Blend mayo with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for a smoky, spicy dip.

Truffle Oil

Drizzle a small amount of truffle oil over the fries after baking for an upscale, earthy flavor.

Aioli

Whip up a garlic aioli or experiment with other flavors like chipotle, basil, or lemon.

Pitfalls and tips

Cut Uniformly

Cut the sweet potatoes into even sticks, about 1/4 inch in thickness, for even cooking.

Use Cornstarch

A light dusting of cornstarch mixed with seasonings before tossing with the fries helps create a crispy exterior.

Dry Thoroughly

After soaking, dry the sweet potato fries completely using a clean kitchen towel or a salad spinner.

Soak the Fries

Soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for at least an hour or overnight to remove excess starch.

Don’t Overcrowd the Pan

Spread the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet without touching to avoid steaming.
