A simple and easy recipe to make perfectly sticky Chinese-style rice, ideal as a side dish or base for your favorite stir-fry or curry.
1. Rinse the Rice
Place the 2 cups of long-grain white rice into a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it thoroughly under cold water. This step is crucial as it removes the excess starch, which helps prevent the rice from becoming too sticky or gummy.
2. Combine Ingredients
Next, combine the rinsed rice, 3 cups of water, and ½ teaspoon of salt in a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to a vigorous boil over high heat.
3. Boil and Reduce Heat
Keep an eye on it as the water level drops below the surface of the rice and small holes start to form. This usually takes about 5 minutes and ensures that the rice cooks evenly and releases its starch properly.
4. Simmer the Rice
Once you see the small holes and the water level has dropped, reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let the rice cook gently for about 15 minutes. This gentle heat allows the rice to cook through evenly without burning or sticking to the bottom of the pan.
5. Check and Serve
After 15 minutes, check that the water is fully absorbed and the rice is tender. If so, your perfectly sticky Chinese-style rice is ready to serve. Enjoy it as a side dish or as a base for your favorite stir-fry or curry.
