1. Combine Ingredients
Place 2 cups of water, 1 cup of short-grained brown rice, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt into a heavy-bottomed pot. Cover the pot with a lid and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
2. Reduce Heat and Simmer
Once the water reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to very low. Maintain a very gentle simmer for 40 to 45 minutes, avoiding lifting the lid.
3. Check for Doneness
After 40 minutes, check the rice for doneness by tasting a small amount; the grains should be tender but still have a bit of chew.
4. Rest and Fluff
When the rice is fully cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Use a fork to gently fluff the rice before serving.
Start with 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice, adjusting as necessary for your preference.
Quality matters. Choose a high-quality, organic short-grain brown rice if possible for the best texture and flavor.
Cook rice in stock and add aromatics like bay leaf, smashed garlic, or ginger to the cooking liquid for enhanced flavor.
Rinse under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch and impurities.
Use a heavy-bottomed pot and cook on a low simmer to ensure even cooking and prevent scorching.
