How to Make Perfectly Silky Sunny-Side Up Eggs

1. Preheat Skillet

Begin by preheating a 12-inch nonstick skillet over low heat for about 5 minutes. This gentle preheat ensures that the eggs will cook evenly without the risk of burning.

2. Prepare Eggs

While the skillet warms up, crack 4 large eggs into teacups or small bowls. This step not only makes it easier to add the eggs to the skillet, but it also allows you to check for any bits of shell or spoiled eggs before they meet the pan.

3. Add Butter

Once the skillet is ready, add a tablespoon of chilled, unsalted butter. Let the butter melt completely, swirling it around to coat the bottom of the skillet.

4. Cook Eggs

Gently pour the eggs from the teacups into the skillet, placing 2 eggs on one side and 2 on the opposite side. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cover the skillet with a lid, which traps the heat and cooks the eggs evenly. Allow them to cook for about 2 to 3 minutes, or until the whites are set and the yolks are thick but still runny.

5. Check and Serve

Remove the lid and check the eggs. If the whites are not fully cooked, cover the skillet again and cook for an additional minute or so. Once the eggs are done to your liking, carefully slide them onto plates. Enjoy your perfectly silky sunny-side up eggs immediately, perhaps with a side of toast or fresh greens.

Variations

Avocado Toast with Sunny-Side Up Egg

Serve the perfectly cooked egg on top of toasted bread spread with ripe mashed avocado. Season with salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Cheesy Sunny-Side Up Eggs

Once the whites are almost set, sprinkle grated cheese such as cheddar, Swiss, or Parmesan over the egg and let it melt into the whites.

Sunny-Side Up Eggs and Smoked Salmon

Place the cooked egg on a slice of toast with cream cheese and top it with smoked salmon, capers, and red onion for a luxurious breakfast or brunch option.

Cheese Please

A little grated cheese can go a long way. Try sprinkling some aged cheddar, crumbled feta, or grated Parmesan over the egg during the last minute of cooking. The heat will soften the cheese, creating a gooey, delicious topping.

Breakfast Tacos with Sunny-Side Up Eggs

Place the cooked egg in a soft tortilla, add shredded cheese, salsa, and avocado for a quick breakfast taco.
