How to Make Autumn Fruit Crumble

    1. Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

    2. Prepare Fruit

Peel, core, and chop the apples, pears, and plums into bite-sized pieces. Toss the fruit pieces into a large bowl and add the lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.

    3. Prepare Crumble Topping

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and rub it into the dry mixture using your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

    4. Assemble Crumble

Take an ovenproof dish and layer the spiced fruit mixture evenly at the bottom. Distribute the crumble topping over the fruit, ensuring an even layer.

    5. Bake

Bake the fruit crumble in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit juices are bubbling up around the edges.

    6. Cool and Serve

Once out of the oven, let the crumble cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

    Variations

    Summer Berry Crumble

Replace autumn fruits with a mix of summer berries and add lemon zest and slivered almonds to the topping.

    Stone Fruit Crumble

Use seasonal peaches, nectarines, apricots, and cherries with almond extract and almond meal in the topping.

    Tropical Crumble

Use tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and banana, with coconut flakes in the topping and a splash of rum for flavor.

    Fruit Combinations

Experiment with different fruits such as pears, apples, quinces, or persimmons, and mix with berries or dried fruits like cranberries or cherries.

    Apple Ginger Crumble

Make a crumble with apples, pears, and a hefty dose of ground or crystallized ginger in both the filling and topping.
