1. Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, panko bread crumbs, Lipton Onion Soup and Dip Mix, and pepper. Use your hands to mix everything together until the ingredients are evenly distributed. Form the beef mixture into four patties, each about 4 inches in diameter and ½ inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.
2. Cook Beef Patties
Heat a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Once the butter is sizzling, add the beef patties to the skillet. Cook them for about 4 minutes on each side, until well browned and the meat reaches an internal temperature of 130 degrees. Remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a platter. Tent them with aluminum foil to keep them warm.
3. Cook Onions
Reduce the heat to medium and add the sliced onion to the now-empty skillet. Cook the onions for about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are lightly browned and beginning to soften.
4. Make Gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat them evenly. Cook the flour for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it cook for about 4 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
5. Finish Gravy and Serve
Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter until melted. Taste the gravy and season with salt and pepper as needed. To serve, place the beef patties on plates, spoon the rich onion gravy over them, and sprinkle with minced fresh chives.
Form the meat mixture into small balls, season with allspice and nutmeg, and serve with a cream-based gravy.
Enhance the core recipe by adding mushrooms to the gravy to make it even richer.
Incorporate finely chopped mushrooms while sautéing the onions to create a richer, umami-packed gravy.
Deglaze your onions with a splash of red wine before adding the broth for a deeper flavor profile.
Add ginger, garlic, a splash of soy sauce, and a pinch of five-spice powder to the patty mix for an Asian-inspired flavor.
