How to Make Air-Fryer French Fries

1. Cut and Rinse Potatoes

Take the russet potatoes and cut them lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick planks, then slice those planks into sticks. Rinse these potato sticks in a large bowl of water to remove excess starch. Repeat this rinsing process until the water runs clear.

2. Soak Potatoes

Soak the potatoes in hot tap water for 10 minutes to remove more starch, ensuring your fries are crispy.

3. Dry Potatoes

Drain the potatoes and lay them out on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Pat them dry thoroughly.

4. Oil and Preheat

Toss the dried potato sticks with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a clean, dry bowl. Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees.

5. Initial Cook

Place the oiled potatoes in the air-fryer basket and cook them for 8 minutes to soften the fries.

6. Redistribute and Continue Cooking

Gently toss the potatoes in a bowl to redistribute them. Return the potatoes to the air fryer and continue cooking at 350 degrees for another 5-10 minutes, until they are softened and have a light, blond color.

7. Final Cook

Toss the partially cooked fries with another tablespoon of vegetable oil and 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Place the potatoes back in the air fryer, increase the temperature to 400 degrees, and cook for 15-20 minutes, redistributing every 5 minutes.

8. Season and Serve

Transfer the golden fries to a large plate and season with more salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately while hot.

Variations

Loaded Fries

Top the air-fried golden fries with crispy bacon bits, chili, or pulled pork, then add cheese, sour cream, green onions, and diced tomatoes for a hearty meal.

Seasoned Fries

Add different seasoning mixes to the potatoes before air-frying, such as garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, or other spices for variants like Garlic Fries, Cajun Fries, or Smoky Fries.

Truffle Fries

A few drops of truffle oil tossed with the fries after cooking will create a luxurious flavor profile.

Cheesy Fries

After air-frying, sprinkle freshly grated cheese over the hot fries for a delicious cheesy version.

Dipping Sauces

Offer a range of dipping sauces like ketchup, spicy mayo, barbecue sauce, ranch, or aioli with herbs to change the flavor profile.
